A Wild Family Safari Camp in the Welgevonden

March 22, 2022

Family Camp began as a beautiful wilderness safari escape for our city-bound family — a place in the wild Welgevonden Game Reserve, near Johannesburg, where our family and kids could enjoy the beauty of the bush, playing on the rocks and watching wildlife stories unfold. We named the camp Shidzidzi, and it remained a beautiful holiday destination for us to relax and unwind each year.

As much as we loved having the lodge to ourselves, In 2019, we came to the decision that such a wonderful space needed to be shared with the world. We have now opened the camp to guests, adding it to our growing Tintswalo portfolio of boutique hotels and luxury lodges. The name “Tintswalo Family Camp” was fitting, given its history as a place where the family could gather themselves and spend time with loved ones — and then return to our busy lives in Johannesburg.

We are so happy that guests from all over the world will now have the opportunity to experience the same warmth, hospitality, dramatic views, and wilderness feels of the reserve. The camp will be available for exclusive use only — families and other bigger groups between 10 and 16 guests travelling together — the opportunity to book out the entire camp and enjoy the peace and tranquility by themselves.

Comfortably furnished, the main communal lounge area provides a warm and welcoming ambience with large fireplaces. One of the most stunning features of the lodge is the magnificent view from the deck; overlooking the Welgevonden bush below. A swimming pool with poolside loungers overlooks the waterhole, and a spacious entertainment room makes for a great conference venue too.

Families with kids can enjoy peace of mind as the camp is protected by electric fencing against predators and dangerous game — allowing children of all ages the freedom to enjoy the outside areas. Spacious freestanding luxury units are positioned on either side of the main lodge, comprising of two 3-bedroom units, each with 2 bathrooms and a veranda overlooking the wilderness; two 1-bedroom units with an en-suite bathroom and adjoining private lounge; and one 2-bedroom unit with en-suite bathrooms.

The Welgevonden Game Reserve is one of the most exclusive and spectacular reserves in Southern Africa — with over 40 000 hectares of bush — making it also one of the largest private reserves in South Africa. The Dutch word “Welgevonden” means “well found” or a “serendipitous discovery” which occurs by chance in a happy or beneficial way. Forming part of the only savanna biosphere reserve in the world, proclaimed by UNESCO in March 2001, It is home to a great variety of game, as well as South Africa’s Big Five and over 50 different mammal species and 300 bird species. The Welgevonden Game Reserve is a pioneer in conservation initiatives; this ethos forming an integral part of the rich, multi-generational family experience on offer at Tintswalo’s Family Camp.

This majestic piece of untouched African wilderness created so many memories for us over the years, and we know it will do the same for you.
